Dr. Alberto Romeo was born in Palermo, Sicily, Italy in 1948 he is an underwater & sport's doctor , a fotojurnalist specializing in marine biology.

As a boy, he was fascinated by underwater photography when he read the books of Hans Hass, Cousteau, Folco Quilici.

Beggining in the 60's Alberto was a pioneer of underwater photography in Sicily, where there was none u/w photographer in his county at that time.

AWARDED IN AN INTERNATIONAL U/W PHOTOCONTEST IN USTICA 1969

In the '70's one of his u/w photographies was chosen by Nikon to advertise their new underwater camera the "Calypso/Nikkor II ",

then he began to publish his articles and photographs in some u/w magazines :
"IL SUBACQUEO" , then "MONDO SOMMERSO" and "SUB" , now also "DEEP" and "ALERT DIVER" :

In 1973 he founded the G.R.O. SUB GRUPPO RICERCATORI ed OPERATORI SUBACQUEI (Underwater Team of Researchers and Photographers) to protect marine life.

In 1980 he started the International Festival of Underwater Images, in Palermo and he directed it for 13 years.

He was the first italian champion of underwater photography in 1984
  

He was a precursor of creative u/w photography and was in " italian national team " since 1989

The C.M.A.S. ( World Underwater Federation) selected him in TOP TEN U/W PHOTOGRAPHERS from all over the world from 1987 to 1990.



He represented Italy in many International contests of underwater photography p. e. : in Red Sea "International Blue Aqaba" in 1986, in Mediterraneum "World Cup " in Ustica in 1989

In the WORLD U/W CHANPIONSHIP in MALDIVES Indian Ocean (suspended for political problems in the islands)

He won more 100 than prizes in u/w photography and is an instructor of u/w photo and video.

He has taught courses in u/w photo in such various places like: Maldives at ASDU , in Azores at Sao Miguel , in Sicily at Terrasini Città del Mare.

He has collaborated with the Archaeologic Sicilyan Authority, with the ECOLOGY, and Marine Biology Institute of the University of Palermo and with some television channels like TELE-ODEON, TELE-SICILIA and R.A.I . (National Italian Television) to produce video- documentaries.

Dr. Romeo published a book about underwater photography called: "FOTOSUB" in 1980

and a book about underwater medicine titled: "MEDICINA SUBACQUEA" in 1982.

he is also a co-author of these books about underwater world:
"ITALY UNDERWATER" , "I CONSIGLI DEI MAESTRI PHOTOSUB", "MANUALE PHOTOSUB" ,  "RELITTI", "EOLIE"

He also published articles about : Maldives , Egypt , Giordania, Sudan , Portugal, Azores , Florida , Cuba and many places in Mediterranean sea, these articles are featured in the magazines: " MONDO SOMMERSO ",

A person  very important to him was JORGE ALBUQUERQUE,  (he died some years ago) portugues, pionier of underwater activites and founder of the C.M.A.S. World Underwater Federation (with JAQUES YVES COUSTEAU and Jaques DUMAS), he introduce him in the world of TOP-VIP-DIVER and help him to organize International Festival of Underwater Images.
Another person important to him is his wife LUCIA SCORDATO, whois also u/w model , buddy and co-author of many works (reportages and documentaries).
